Read Escobar family denies having land in Bahia de las Aguilas

Despite appearing on the list of owners said to have benefitted from the proposed deal President Danilo Medina authorized in power of attorney to sign for the Dominican state, Virginia Read Escobar is denying that her family is disputing land ownership in the area. She says the family opposes the development of the fragile beach areas.

Lawyer Jose Perez Feliz told acento.com.do that the Read Escobar family does not have land in Bahia de las Aguilas and the mention of their names is to enable him to claim the legal fees owed to their late father Mario Read Vittini who had defended people who allegedly purchased property there in good faith. In the transactional act signed by the state dated 15 January 2013, they are included on the list of supposed owners of 81 lots. Virginia Read said that after her father’s death they were engaged in a legal battle to obtain the payment of the lawyer fees. Virginia Read, who lives in Spain, said that she was surprised to learn that her family was included among the owners of those properties “when we have always been opposed to touching Bahia de las Aguilas.” In the transactional deal the family is represented by lawyer Jose Maria Perez Feliz, who says there is a mistake.

“We have to clarify, because there could be an error, because my role in this case is to represent the descendants of Mario Read Vittini, is to represent them in claiming the rights of the lawyers before the clients of lawyer Read Vittini or to be precise to the foreign investors that he had as clients,” he told acento.com.do

When acento.com.do asked if the discussion should be with the client, not the Dominican state, the lawyer agreed. “There is an error there, and that has to be clarified.”
