Spanish galleon docks in Santo Domingo

La Pepa, a replica of a 17th century Spanish galleon, will dock in Santo Domingo as part of the events marking the Bicentennial of the 1812 Spanish Constitution. The bicentenary celebrations mark the first democracy in Spain, and the constitution was drawn up in Cadiz in 1812. It was known as La Pepa, after the day when it was written n Day of San Jose. The ship will be in Santo Domingo from Sunday, 24 February to Sunday, 3 March.

The tall ship is on its Ibero-American Tour. The other cities it will visit are San Juan, Puerto Rico, Cartagena, Colombia, Veracruz, Mexico, Miami and San Agustin, Florida.

La Pepa is a replica of a 17th century trading ship, of the so-called Indies fleet that sailed from Seville to the Americas. Fitted with all modern technologies, it has three masts and seven sails. The ship was built between 2008 and 2010 and is 55 meters in length with 320 meters of surface and capacity for 250 people. It will be open to visitors in Santo Domingo from Sunday, 24 February.
