Everything has come to a standstill at the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD) with the 72-hour strike by the administrative workers started by the Association of University Employees. The lecturers are also entering their second day on strike.
Students have said that it is unfair as it is they who suffer and officers from the Dominican Student Vanguard (VED) have condemned the strike and asked the Rector, Mateo Aquino Febrillet, the heads of Faprouasd (the University Professors Union) and Asodemu (the Association of University Employees) to start a dialogue to resolve the crisis.
VED General Secretary Juan Manuel Garcia said that if the Rector and the unions cannot respond to their request they will firstly have a peaceful vigil, followed by a symbolic crucifixion before going on hunger strike until the problem is settled.
Faprouasd president Ismael Peralta said that the strike had been 100% successful and when it was due to be over on Friday 22 February they would announce their next steps.
Asodemu president Reynaldo Aybar said that they wanted a salary increase of 60% as the 10% offered by the Rector was insufficient.
