Bauxite mining operation controversy

Reports on differences in the mining operations regarding concessions granted by the Dominican government in Cabo Rojo, Pedernales are emerging. The mining operations are located in areas where many believe priority should have been given to more environmentally-friendly tourism development. Two companies, Nova Mining and Sierra Bauxita, are challenging decisions by new mining director Alexander Medina. The companies say the new director has favored Dovemco, a company formed in September 2012, after the start of the Medina administration in August 2012.

In a letter sent by Nova Mining to acento.com.do the company says they are now being required to use the operational services of Dovemco, with the payment of US$8.50 per ton in order to continue their bauxite operations.

Mining director Medina says that in 2006 Nova Mining committed to install a bauxite processing plant and seven years later this has not happened.

In a letter to acento.com.do he says that in September 2012 a project was started to reopen the exports of bauxite from the Las Mercedes Mines.
