The president of the Chamber of Accounts (CCRD), the governmental accountability office, says that many government entities retain taxes from their employees, but do not report them to the Department of Taxes (DGII). As reported in Listin Diario, Licelot Marte de Barrios said that she met with directors and financial offices of several delinquent government offices. “We have detected a sizeable practice of retaining taxes and not paying these funds to the state. There are very large sums involved, beyond what you could imagine. There are institutions that owe millions of pesos,” she said.
