Careless citizens and Duquesa problems hamper a clean city

The lack of citizenship education and the fact that the refuse dump at Duquesa is not available at night are the reasons that keep the city of Santo Domingo from being clean, according to Mayor Roberto Salcedo. During his participation in the Dialogo Libre section of Diario Libre, the city’s boss and administrator added that most of their work in Santo Domingo, specifically the National District, is dedicated to garbage collection. “There is a behavioral thing with which we have to start. We are talking about the fact that we are two million people among whom I include myself, who are dirtying the city on a permanent basis,” said Salcedo.

He argued that under these conditions, “no matter how much you want to, it is impossible for two thousand people to clean up after two million. The effort is made every day as they sweep the city. But what happens is that you sweep now and in half an hour it leaves the impression that it was never swept.” He said that the La Duquesa garbage landfill only received refuse until 8pm and this is combined with the problem of the roadway which is really a muddy, rural track through the community of Los Cazabes, while the road that connects the refuse dump directly has still not been fixed by the central government. “Duquesa is outside the control of the National District, and it is the only place we have available and they do not work at night. It is a unique case, because in all of the cities of the world, the garbage is collected at night. Here it is not possible because the refuse dump is closed,” stated the mayor of the capital.
