Canadian mining firm GoldQuest is announcing that there has been progress in its exploration for mining in the area of Las Tres Palmas. The findings will be presented at the PDAC2013 mining investment show from 3-6 March in Toronto.
The mining operation has the support of the new Director of Mines, Alexander Medina, who has said that the inhabitants of La Higuera now all have jobs. The department of Mines said that the discovery of gold is regarded as the most important in 20 years at a global level. As reported, the company has raised US$21 million from investors in the stock market.
There is a possible one million ounces in the area. The mining company says that the gold 200 meters below ground where its environmental effects will not be significant.
Bishop Jose Dolores Grullon Estrella, who strongly opposes gold mining in the area warned that granting a permit for mining for gold waters up the Sabaneta hydroelectric dam would be a “true disaster.”
The gold mine is located in the heart of the Jose del Carmen Ramirez National Park. He said the mining would cause the slow but sure death of the residents in San Juan. He said it would mark the disappearance of farm production in the valley, even if this occurs in the long term. “We will not permit this,” he said. He described the possible exploitation as an “absurdity, a crime, a disaster for life, not only for San Juan, but also for Neiba and Barahona.”
