Improvement in public services

In his State of the Nation address yesterday, Wednesday 27 February President Danilo Medina reiterated his pledges to the poorest sectors of the population and stressed his desire to improve the country by eliminating poverty, as well as strengthening the middle class, which he sees as the key to improving people’s quality of life and to guarantee the expansion of the internal market and political and social stability.

He said that he knew that it was important for the middle class to keep a precarious balance between income and expenditure, and that they contributed significantly to the country by paying taxes despite not having access to quality public services. Instead, said Medina, they have had to dig into their family budget to compensate for the inadequacies of the public system. In order to rectify this, he said that the government has started to improve the efficiency of public spending and he promised that the funds would be used up to the last peso to satisfy the needs of the population and to provide quality public services, to aid the outgoings of the middle class.
