President Danilo Medina has declared the works to improve tourism in the Colonial City of Santo Domingo to be of high national and social interest. He issued Decree 29-13 that orders freedom of movement over roofs and walls of buildings in certain areas of the Colonial City. The decree will enable companies working in the area to have free access for the installation of improvements in the electricity service. In 2011, the government began a project for the improvement of the tourist attractions in the old city with funding from the Inter-American Development Bank. The Colonial City of Santo Domingo was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1990.
