The Medina administration has decided to abandon plans to start operations of the La Vega-Santiago highway toll station, which was installed during the Fernandez administration at a cost of RD$200 million. Objections from transport unions have prevented the tollbooths from entering into operation. The Ministry of Public Works says it will be dismantling part of the installations. A source told Diario Libre that legalities would be worked out with Dovicon, the company that was responsible for construction. On 15 July 2011, Congress passed the contract with Dovicon that has been equated to one previously signed with Codacsa for the southeast, which cost the governments millions of dollars when it was rescinded. As reported in Diario Libre, the contract involved the construction of several alternative roads that were never built.
