Dominican reactions to Chavez’ death

National political leaders have been expressing their sorrow at the news of the death of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez Frias yesterday, Tuesday 5 March, and saying that the Dominican people would remember him as a man who served the whole of Latin America and especially the Dominican Republic, with whom he had a close relationship.

Senate president Reinaldo Pared Perez also expressed his condolences, saying that Chavez was a great friend and excellent ally to the country, while Chamber of Deputies president Abel Martinez said that the Dominican people would always be in his debt.

Yesterday, March 5, former Presidents Leonel Fernandez and Hipolito Mejia sent separate letters of condolence to the vice president of Venezuela, Nicolas Maduro.

Fernandez said that he was sure that Chavez’s energy, vitality, big dreams and future projects would be missed, as well as his work for social justice, for the most disadvantaged, not only of Venezuela but also in other countries.

Mejia described his death as a great loss for Venezuela as well as for the countries that were recipients of his generosity. He described him as a man who decided to share his country’s oil wealth to sustain democracy in others.

PRD president Miguel Vargas expressed his condolences to the Venezuelan people and their government, saying that he would always remember and be grateful for Chavez’ solidarity. Leading PRD members Luis Abinader and Orlando Jorge Mera expressed their grief at the death of Chavez, saying that Dominicans would always be grateful for his generosity.

The ruling PLD said that the party had been shaken by the news, describing the late Venezuelan president as a leader who would be remembered for his solidarity with people around the world.

PRSC General Secretary Ramon Rogelio Genao said that Dominicans as well as Venezuelans would be grieving over the death of Chavez and that they were grateful for his eternal solidarity with ‘the homeland of Duarte’.

Roberto Rosario, president of the Central Electoral Board (JCE), said that the death of Chavez would weigh heavily not only in the Dominican Republic, a country who loved him deeply, but throughout Latin America.

The President of the Dominican Petroleum Refinery (PDV), Felix (Felucho) Jimenez, described Chavez as one of the most influential leaders of recent years.
