The Dominican government has expressed its condolences to Venezuela on the death of president Hugo Chavez, who died yesterday, Tuesday 5 March, following a battle against cancer.
President Danilo Medina sent a letter to the Vice President of Venezuela, Nicolas Maduro, saying that the Dominican government lamented the death of Chavez, describing him as an intimate and loyal friend of the Dominican people.
The letter went on to say that they would pray for his eternal peace and that President Medina hoped that the late leader’s family and friends would find comfort and consolation in these times of deep sadness.
Medina also said that he would ask God to guide the Venezuelan people to continue strengthening their institutions and the democratic system, to contribute to their growth and development.
The letter also expressed Medina’s hope that the spirit of solidarity that has characterized bilateral relations between the peoples of the Americas, including the Dominican Republic, would prevail.
The Presidency ordered that flags be flown at half-staff for three days, Wednesday, 6 March through Friday, 8 March in mourning for President Chavez.
