Teachers union and Ministry sign an agreement

The public schoolteachers union (ADP) and the Ministry of Education have agreed to sit down to talks to reach an agreement on wage increases. The agreement was signed by deputy minister for technical affairs (Minerva Vincent), supervision (Jorge Adalberto Martinez), planning (Victor Sanchez) and human resources (Carmen Pujols). ADP president Eduardo Hidalgo signed on behalf of the teachers union, as well as Maria Teresa Cabrera, Xiomara Guante, Felix Nunez, Primitiva Medina and Tomas Pichardo Martinez.

The agreement is aimed at ending the impasse that led to a nationwide teachers strike at public schools. This is affecting students at a time when the Medina administration has doubled funding available for public education. The teachers were seeking a 100% wage increase and the Ministry had offered a minimum of RD$15,000 per work shift. As a result of the agreement, the teachers have gone back to work while the discussions continue.
