DR over Puerto Rico in World Baseball Classic

Bud Selig’s dream of spreading baseball around the world continues to flourish and the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and Venezuela continue to shine. Last night, Sunday 10 March, the Dominican Republic was able to get revenge for its 2006 loss to Puerto Rico by scoring a solid 4-2 victory, and take the honors in Group C of the Classic. Good pitching from Wandy Rodriguez, Lorenzo Barcelo, Octavio Dotel, Santiago Casilla and Samana’s Fernando Rodney kept the Puerto Ricans in check while Robinson Cano, Edwin Encarnacion, Miguel Tejada and Nelson Cruz provided much of the 12-hit offense for the Dominican side. After taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning, Lorenzo Barcelo allowed a homerun by Mike Aviles that put the Puerto Rican side up 2-1. This advantage did not last long as Robinson Cano tied the game in the next inning with a long homerun over the left centerfield fence. The game was sealed with runs in the sixth and seventh from the bats of Carlos Santana, Ricardo Nanita and Alejandro de Aza and then Encarnacion, Miguel Tejada and Nelson Cruz. Barcelo was the winning pitcher and a save for Rodney. The Dominican Republic will play Italy on Tuesday, 12 March.
