Police officials have announced the arrest of a man who admitted planning the robbery of an armored car carrying millions of pesos in cash and checks in Barahona last week. He was identified in El Nuevo Diario as Leandro Enrique Almonte Serrata (a.k.a. “Geni”), 33, who took advantage of his position as an employee of the security company that owned the armored car to plan the theft. Almonte Serrata admitted that he had offered a million pesos to a fugitive, Eddy Javier Valentin, to actually carry out the robbery. According to his story, it was agreed that his share of the money was to be given to Eddy Javier’s mistress Yahaira Perez de Leon, who is currently under arrest. The accused mastermind said that he has not received any of the money. The RD$16.5 million heist took place last Thursday, 7 March.
