The Electricity Superintendence (SIE) says that the electricity companies handed over more than RD$8 million to customers in refunds in the month of February alone. The refunds were requested via the Department of Consumer Protection (PROTECOM).
The Eastern Electricity Distributor, Edeeste had the most refunds, RD$4,909,247, followed by the Northern Electricity Distributor, Edenorte with RD$2,082,284 and finally the Southern Distributor, Edesur with RD$1,481,348.
The communication highlighted that from August 2004 until February 2013, Protecom has authorized refunds to consumers of RD$1,321,572,648.
Superintendent Eduardo Quincoces said that the law states that the Electricity Distribution companies have to refund customers in the case of complaints about high consumption, faulty meters, tariff changes, wrong disconnections, and other reasons.
He encouraged customers who believe they are entitled to a refund, to go to the consumer protection office and make their complaint.
