500km of streets and roads paved since August 2012

The Ministry of Public Works rebuilt or paved 500km of streets and highways between August 2012 and February 2013. This asphalting program includes urban areas in the Greater Santo Domingo, and the provinces of Santo Domingo, Barahona, San Cristobal, La Vega, San Juan, Espaillat (Moca), Barahona, Duarte (San Francisco de Macoris), Sanchez Ramirez (Cotui), Hermanas Mirabal (Salcedo), Monsenor Nouel (Bonao), Azua, Dajabon, Peravia (Bani), Montecristi, San Pedro de Macoris, San Juan de la Maguana, San Jose de Ocoa and Samana.

As reported, the Ministry of Public Works under Minister Gonzalo Castillo met with city and province representatives in the 32 provinces and signed agreements with the local governments. The Ministry provides the technical staff and the materials, while the city governments commit to repairing the streets and drainage systems prior to paving.

More than 50 brigades with 900 workers have been involved in the process. The program is coordinated by deputy minister Vernice Paez, director of Operations and Road Maintenance at the Ministry of Public Works, as reported in El Caribe.
