Recycling in San Jose de las Matas

Diario Libre reports today, Monday 18 March that 70% of solid waste in the municipality of San Jose de las Matas is being collected and classified for recycling. Mayor Jorge Luis Bisono says the recycling program is the result of years of citizen education. He said that workshops, talks and advice had yielded positive results. The Mayor said that the municipality would soon be recycling 90% of its solid waste. The initiative got its start with a EUR246,000 fund for the construction of a model waste management depot and a center for processing waste into organic fertilizer for sale to the Plan Sierra and other entities for farming. The urban area generates 12 tons of solid waste that is classified as organic and non-organic by households and businesses.
