Fenatrado warns of freight rate increase

The president of the National Federation of Dominican Transportation (Fenatrado), Blas Peralta, says that the sector is not interested in the diesel subsidy, but instead, the government should take responsibility and work out a series of freight rates that can be adapted to the needs of the union. According to El Nuevo Diario, Peralta wants the government to remove all subsidies from all the different sectors. He said that if they carry out a study, the authorities would see that they would have to increase freight rates by 225%. His call for the elimination of all subsidies is based on what he described as the big businesspeople who call themselves electricity producers that receive a subsidy that they are not using and what is excess they sell to themselves on the black market. The Dominican government has accepted a practical monopoly of freight transport by the powerful freight union in the Dominican Republic.
