Dominican Republic calls for gun control

The Vice Minister of Interior and Police, Brigade General Ricardo Rosa Chupani, speaking at a United Nations Conference on the Arms Trade Treaty taking place at the UN Headquarters in New York, has called on the international community to find ways to regulate the sales of firearms, and advocated the eradication of the misuse of such weapons.

He said that it was very important to do everything possible and come to a consensus on ways of regulating firearms adequately, as well as weapons of war, and international arms and munitions trade.

Chupani added that it was important to stop the existence of weapons that were used to harm mainly women and children, the most vulnerable members of society.

He also announced that the Dominican Republic was going to implement a new Arms Control System that would capture ballistic and biometric fingerprints.

The treaty seeks to establish high common standards for international trade in conventional arms.
