The Dominican Republic exported RD$2 billion to Haiti last year. Nonetheless, millions of pesos transacted for educational services, health, tourism, construction and transport are unaccounted for, as reported in Diario Libre. Minister of Industry and Commerce Jose del Castillo says that 14 market points are now open as part of the bi-national program that was started with the backing of the European Union. The main ones are at Dajabon and Ouanaminthe (Haiti).
In an interview in Hoy newspaper, the executive secretary of the National Commission of Trade Negotiations of the Ministry of Foreign Relations Luis Omar Fernandez said the country is seeking an agreement with Haiti so that fixed tariffs on trade are put in place. He said that at present, exporters are affected by the constant changes in tariffs, duties and fees on exports to Haiti, and that these changes are often imposed for political reasons and without prior notice.
