Wise advice for travelers

The Easter Week and its long weekend, from Friday 28 to Sunday 31 March is the most popular time for vacationing in beach and mountain areas. Here is some wise counsel to consider before taking to the road this week. First of all, you should know that this year’s Holy Week Operation will begin at 2pm on Thursday, 28 March. This means that over 30,000 volunteers and military and Police officials will be on the roads and beaches and swimming spots to supervise activities. No horses or motorized vehicles will be allowed on the beaches or in the water. There will be traffic flow controls with patrol cars covering the highways at 80kph. All visible weapons will be confiscated according to the Chief of Police.

And:

1) Tell someone where you are going and when you plan to return;

2) Disconnect everything in your house n everything – and turn off your gas at the tank if you can. Be sure to lock the doors and windows. If possible do not leave the house by itself;

3) Make sure each member of the group who is travelling knows what is expected of them: Who carries what and who cleans up;

4) Either prepare or buy a first-aid kit, and store away extra water and baby food and diapers;

5) Check the vehicle BEFORE you leave – water, oil, tires, battery, jumper cables, spare tire, jack, lug wrench, flashlight;

6) Listen to the radio for any news about the roads you are about to take. Talk to friends who are already underway. Prepare alternative routes if possible;

7) Take care of your pets, either with friends or at a veterinarian;

8) Pay any bills that might come while you are awayowater, lights, cable, phone etc.
