DR spends 0.7% of GDP on armed forces

Diario Libre reports that according to data from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), from 2006 to 2010 the Dominican Republic spent 0.7% of its GDP on military expenditure. The armed forces have a total of 30,000 members as well as 34,000 members of the police who each are assigned at least one weapon, depending on the service. Diario Libre reports that in 1990 the Dominican government spent US$93.6 million on its military budget. This increased to US$175 million in 1994, US$345 million in 2000, US$296 million by 2006 and US$325 million in 2011. The leading weapons provider is the United States. According to United Nations guidelines, nations should not assign more than 1% of GDP to military expenditure.
