Dr. Hector Quezada, director of the Dario Contreras trauma hospital has resigned from his post, which he held for nine years. At the age of 66, after dedicating 34 years of his life to the Dario Contreras Hospital, he says that the crisis affecting the sector is also affecting the staff’s capacity to respond to the increasing demands from the patients.
Dario Contreras hospital, the country’s main trauma center, has a debt of over RD$120 million. It receives RD$7.2 million a month and spends double that amount, especially as most patients cannot afford to pay for treatment. The hospital even has to pay for the coffins for many people who die.
Dr. Quezada said that the authorities had supported him greatly and that his resignation was voluntary, as it was time to hand over to the new generation. He said he would stay in his post until a successor was appointed.
Doctors from the Dominican Medical Association recently went on strike due to the poor condition of equipment and infrastructure. It came to an end when Public Health Minister Freddy Hidalgo promised to solve the problem.
