The Armed Forces and the National Police have increased their nightly patrols and random operations across the country, as part of the recently introduced Citizen Security Plan.
Armed Forces Minister Admiral Sigfrido Pared Perez says that the patrols have started with 600 agents, which when combined with the agents working in the specialized Peaceful City unit, set up last December, gives a total of 780.
He told Listin Diario that they had checkpoints with very specific profiling to stop vehicles suspected of containing illegal weapons. They are also using intelligence from the National Investigations Department (DNI), M2, J2 and the National Drug Control Agency (DNCD) as well as 18 trucks, 40 motorcycles and communications equipment.
He went on to say that criminals did not want legal weapons; on the contrary, the authorities were concerned at the large number of watchmen and retired military officials who are being killed for their weapons.
He said that drug trafficking was the area of greatest concern due to the crimes connected to it such as murder, robbery, settling scores, neighborhood fights and the recruitment of young people to sell drugs.
