Rodriguez made the announcement on Wednesday. He is bullish on exports for the DR in 2013. He has already noted that non-free zone industry exports are up 44% during the first two months of the year, compared to 2012. He says that from January to February exports totaled US$560 million, up from US$390 million in 2012. Rodriguez attributes the increase to the Medina administration’s improved small business (Pymes) credit access policy. Rodriguez added that tobacco and free zone industry are also up.
According to US statistics from the US International Trade Commission, tobacco product exports (mainly cigars) were up 76.6% in January, from US$13.23 million in January 2012 to US$23.49 million in 2013. Footwear is also up 49.4%, from US$10.7 million in 2012 to US$16.02 million in 2013. As reported in Hoy, medical instrument exports are also up, 16.4% compared to an 11.5% increase for January 2013. Even apparel reports an increase, up 46.6% for US$32.22 million. Luisa Fernandez of the National Council of Free Zones says that the DR was the only DR-CAFTA country reporting increases in apparel exports.
