Trajano files suit over JCE fees

The president of the Justice and Transparency Foundation, Trajano Potentini announced yesterday, Sunday 7 April that he has filed an appeal of unconstitutionality regarding the “taxes” that the Central Electoral Board (JCE) charges for issuing documents and civil status certificates. Trajano said that it is against the Constitution for the JCE to issue a resolution that establishes fees ranging from RD$300 to RD$10,000 for the emission of vital documents. In addition, he says that “the periods of validity of the documents are very brief and the expiration dates are over too short a time.” He argues that these are taxes imposed by the JCE and disguised as fees for the emission of birth certificates, death certificates, marriage certificates or divorce certificates, as well as “cedulas” and other documents.
