Almeyda questions some officials’ party links

PLD Party stalwart and Political Committee member Franklin Almeyda Rancier says that the concentration of power the party has achieved in recent years is a cause for concern at the United States Embassy in Santo Domingo and the private sector represented by the National Business Council (Conep).

Almeyda, who is also the Presidential Security Advisor, said that efforts are being made to reduce the PLD’s presence in the government, placing people who respond to those interests and who at one time or another were linked to the USAID around President Danilo Medina. According to Almeyda, they include the Minister of the Presidency Gustavo Montalvo.

Almeyda said that the PLD, which has won five elections, and is in its third consecutive administration, has no political opposition. He made the point that the nearest opposition party is suffering an internal schism and this is causing concern among several sectors that might garner influence. Almeyda speculates that Montalvo could be the person with whom these sectors could work more closely. “Certainly, Gustavo himself at one point worked as a USAID consultant, so there is an old relationship which makes good communication possible,” he said.
