Two explosions close to the finish line yesterday, Monday 15 April, have marred this year’s Boston Marathon forever. Like the explosion at the Atlanta Olympic Games or the events of 9/11, this will be remembered for a very long time. Patriots’ Day is a special date in Boston and the marathon draws thousands of runners from all across the world. Nobody will remember the winners from Ethiopia and Kenya, but they will remember the two blasts, several seconds apart, which killed at least three people including a eight-year old boy, and injured over 100. Diario Libre reports that Dominican runners Teodoro Urena Juan Isidro Guzman, Antonio de la Cruz, Cesar Estevez and Wendy Reyes had finished the race some time before the explosions.
Authorities ranging from President Obama to the race organizers have promised to discover the perpetrators of this “terror” attack. The finishing line at the Boston Marathon is a highly patrolled and highly watched area and it is not a “soft target” by any means.
