Al Greenspan recommends public debt at 20% of GDP

The public credit department of the Ministry of Hacienda recently said that as of 28 February 2013 the non-financial public sector debt exceeds US$20.395 billion or 34.1% of the GDP estimated for 2013. At a talk in Santo Domingo yesterday, Tuesday 16 April, former US Federal Reserve chairman Al Greenspan recommended that the public debt should not be more than 20%. Listin Diario reported today, Wednesday 17 April, that the country’s public debt (foreign and domestic) is more than 46% of the GDP.

Vice President Margarita Cedeno and Governor of the Central Bank Hector Valdez Albizu were present at the talk by Greenspan.

Greenspan said that the country needed to get the message across that the country is firmly committed to keep the fiscal deficit under control because that is the only way to lower interest rates.
