The Supreme Court of Justice has cleared Peravia senator Wilton Guerrero and journalist Osvaldo Santana, editor of El Caribe, of all charges in the defamation suit submitted by former President Hipolito Mejia. The criminal court chamber of the Supreme Court accepted the recourse that the defamation suit violated the Constitution. The court ordered the former President to cover the legal costs. Mejia was present during the hearing and left the hall. Those present applauded the judge’s decision that favored Guerrero and Santana.
Mejia had sued the pair over a report that Mejia had gone to the Mexican state of Sinaloa, in an airplane piloted by a trusted aide of a Mexican drug trafficker, Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman in February 2012 in the middle of the DR presidential election campaign.
