Home gardens plan launched

Vice President Margarita Cedeno has announced the start of two new programs for home gardens and livestock farming. The Cabinet for the Coordination of Social Policy under the Vice President and the Ministry of Agriculture have made RD$620 million available to help create 281,000 small home gardens and animal husbandry farms in order to contribute to family food security and income generation. The announcement was made yesterday, Wednesday 17 April at the Community Technological Center in Villa Mella, northern Santo Domingo. Vice President Cedeno was joined by Minister of Agriculture Luis Ramon Rodriguez, Deputy Minister of Agriculture Agnes Cishek and the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) representative in the country Gero Vaagt.

Vice President Cedeno said that participants would receive training in nutrition in a program coordinated with FAO.

She went on to say that by 2016, some 800,000 families would benefit from the program.
