Political parties resist being regulated

A bill that has languished in Congress for more than a decade has again failed to advance. Listin Diario reports that the political parties are boycotting the modernization of the party political system in the Dominican Republic. The bill would limit the use of taxpayer funds by the parties and propaganda during the political elections. It also contains clauses that deal with political patronage and women’s participation, it would eliminate the Central Electoral Board (JCE) role of monitoring party primaries and the reservation of candidacies in the party for political party board of directors and the ability of politicians to move freely from one party to another.

The report says that since 1999, the dominant political parties, like the PLD that controls the Congress since 2006 and the PRD that had the control of Congress from 1998-2006 have allied with the PRSC to prevent the approval of the bill that is aimed at enhancing democracy in the DR.
