Construction company Odebrecht has completed the installation of 973 concrete markers at intervals of 200 meters to define the boundaries of the Los Haitises National Park, which is north of Punta Cana and south of Samana. The Ministry of Environment has a co-management agreement with Funkarst, a not-for-profit foundation dedicated to the conservation and promotion of the area. Ministry of Environment Bautista Rojas Gomez said that the definition of the boundaries would help protect Los Haitises, which is regarded as a major water resource for the country. During the announcement on Thursday 18 April, Funkarst president Frank Rainieri thanked the local rural communities for their support for the project. Deputy minister for protected areas Daneris Santana, Claudio Castro representing Odebrecht, and historian Bernardo Vega also attended the event.
