Strike groups in SFM refuse meetings with authorities

The organizations that are calling for a 48-hour strike in San Francisco de Macoris have refused to meet with the local governor or the representative of a government agency like the Directorate General of Multilateral Cooperation or even the city mayor. They have reiterated their strike call for today, Tuesday 23 and tomorrow, Wednesday 24 April in the communities of Castillo, Salcedo, Bonao and other towns in the area. Students have been burning tires at the local branch of the state university (UASD), as well as on some of the main streets of San Francisco and other areas since early this morning. The local representative of the Popular Front (FALPO) said that they were protesting to demand that the authorities line an irrigation channel with concrete, build the Culture Plaza, build the highway between San Francisco and Rio San Juan as well as the San Francisco Beltway. The protesters also want the streets repaved in the barrios and are calling for an alleged fraud case in the city government to be punished. Government representatives told El Nuevo Diario that the protest groups refused to meet with officials to discuss their demands.
