After a private meeting that took place on the sidelines of the Fifth Summit of the Association of Caribbean States on Friday, 26 April, President Danilo Medina and his Haitian counterpart Michel Martelly announced that the DR would make space available at Dominican government offices to support the identifying of Haitians. Although life without identification is almost normal in Haiti, undocumented immigrants cause major problems in the Dominican Republic, especially when their children want to move up in the Dominican school system and get formal jobs. The citizen documentation process in Haiti, where it is estimated that around half the population is undocumented, has received the support of the Organization of American States (OAS).
Medina said that once these citizens are provided with identity documents, the Dominican Republic would be able to grant temporary work visas and regulate employment contracts, through the Department of Immigration.
This was President Danilo Medina’s first official visit to Haiti.
