Attorney General Francisco Dominguez Brito is warning that anyone who breaks the law relating to the Protection and Responsible Possession of animals, number 248-12, will be prosecuted, and that mistreatment of and cruelty to animals will be punished by imprisonment and fines.
He said that every society is either civilized or primitive and human beings should treat animals in a civilized way. He said that the Animal Protection law reflected this and he could not allow what he described as “primitive behavior” towards the environment and animals.
He said that cruelty to animals was a daily occurrence, giving the example of horses in the city center.
He instructed public prosecutors to ensure the law was upheld at a meeting in the Attorney General’s office that was also attended by Dr. Marilyn Lois, president of the Foundation for the Protection of Animals (FUPRADL).
Dr. Lois called on the public to report cases of animal abuse and poisoning to the authorities.
