According to the National Statistics Office (ONE) and based on the 2010 census data, the town of Los Cacaos in San Cristobal province has the lowest level of unemployment in the Dominican Republic with a rate of 2.7%.
El Llano and Banica in Elias Pina province are at the other end of the scale, with unemployment rates of 23% and 18.9% respectively, compared to the national average of 8.45%.
The National District (5%), Mao (5.9%), Moca (6.02%), Bani (6.4%), Santiago (6.51%), La Vega (6.22%) and Higuey (7%) are some of the cities with low levels of unemployment, as there is a range of different types of employment including industry, agriculture, agro industry, tourism, Free Zones and commerce.
The provinces with the highest levels of unemployment are Elias Pina (15.28%), Monte Cristi (12.7%), Neiba (10.74%) and Dajabon (10.46%), none of which have managed to diversify their economies, and are still dependent on only one or two economic activities.
Elias Pina and Dajabon rely on the markets with Haiti and agriculture, with no manufacturing at all. Neiba, which has very strong potential for agriculture, only relies on grapes and other minor crops. Many people have to go to Jimani to work. Monte Cristi, which has the best natural port in the country, has also not developed, relying on banana and rice production that employ 80% Haitian labor.
