The government literacy program, “Quisqueya Learns With You” now has 221,507 Dominicans taking part, with a government target of 300,140 by the end of July.
The provinces with the most people learning, according to the targets, are Santo Domingo with 32,487, Santiago 19,045, San Juan 16,952, Azua 14,222, San Cristobal 14,898, Puerto Plata 11,730, and in Peravia (Bani) 9,828.
According to data from the Presidency Department for Special Programs, as of May 3, a total of 17,039 centers were up and running and the Education Ministry had approved 21,590 trainers.
Miriam Camilo, director general of the Adult and Youth Education department at the Ministry, said that 18,560 educational kits had been distributed, including some in Braille to teach the visually impaired to read and write.
The Ministry of Education is also ready to issue materials for a flexible basic education model for trainees who, after having learned to read and write, wish to continue their education.
