More on how the transport sector operates

In a second article about the business of transport in the DR, Diario Libre journalists Tania Molina and Mariela Mejia focus on the backgrounds of the leaders of the transport businesses that have manipulated governments throughout the years and become multi-million peso companies in the process.

Antonio Marte of Conatra was a shared taxi driver on the Mao to Moncion route, a trucker in 1978 who transported charcoal. Today he leads a business with 1,376 affiliates nationwide and 246 companies, including tourist transport. He is said to control 100% of the taxi companies.

Alfredo Pulinario was in the army when he began as a taxi driver organizer. Today Mochotran controls 120 routes, 125 transport businesses and 27,000 drivers.

Juan Hubieres was not available for interview. He is believed to control about 70% of transport in Santo Domingo.
