Stats on taxi service in the DR

An estimated 25,000 taxi units are in service in the DR, but the Consejo de Administracion y Regulacion de Taxis (CART) has only registered 3,487 units. A total of 142 companies are registered, but there are about 20 more, according to a new article in the series on public transport in Diario Libre. The reporters say there are too many units and lack of regulation.

Rates for services start at RD$150. The report says that of a population of 3.3 million in the Greater Santo Domingo, around 1.2 million are users of public transport. In addition, 70% of the 16,000 radio-connected taxis are based in the Greater Santo Domingo area. The president of CART, Desiderio Ruiz says that 1,000 taxis would be enough.
