US$1.5 billion in unpaid traffic fines

The government says there are US$1.5 billion in uncollected traffic fines issued since 2006, according to Metropolitan Transport Authority (AMET) statistics. General Juan Geronimo Brown Perez said that there is no way to oblige drivers who do not voluntarily pay the fines to do so.

According to the records, 67,119 drivers have accumulated 1,340,000 fines from 2006 to date.

Colonel Jacobo Mateo Moquete said that public transport taxi driver Kelvis Manuel Jimenez Nunez has been fined on 474 occasions. He owes RD$498,679 in fines and is still on the road. So far this year, AMET records show he has accumulated four fines. He said 410 shared taxi driver drivers have been fined more than 100 times.

There are 3,433 drivers with at least 50 fines, another 10,154 with 25-49 fines, and another 53,532 with 10 to 24 fines.

Fines range from RD$1,000 to RD$1,667 and need to be paid at the traffic courts.
