The Center for Emergency Operations (COE) issued a green alert for seven provinces yesterday, Tuesday 21 May, as a precautionary measure due to the rains caused by a low-pressure trough and tropical low-pressure wave over the country today, Wednesday 22 and tomorrow Thursday 23 May. The provinces under alert are San Pedro de Macoris, Monte Plata, San Cristobal, Sanchez Ramirez (Cotui), Azua, Greater Santo Domingo and Monsignor Nouel (Bonao). The latter was already under alert.
According to Diario Libre, the National Meteorological Office (Onamet) report says that the cloud cover associated with a tropical wave located to the southwest of the Dominican Republic and the humidity from a low-pressure trough over the Windward Channel will continue causing rain showers, electrical storms and occasional wind gusts. Due to these conditions, a significant increase in rainfall is expected, especially in the southeast, southwest, Central Mountains and along the border. The COE warned residents of high-risk areas including along rivers and streams in the provinces under alert to take precautionary measures and heed the advice of the relief agencies. In general, members of the public should refrain from crossing rivers and streams because many are carrying massive amounts of water.
