Recycling in Santo Domingo

Diario Libre reports on the work of the Fundacion Comunitaria de Saneamiento that is exchanging food for used plastics in some of the capital’s poorest neighborhoods. Residents of the Gualey and Simon Bolivar barrios have enthusiastically joined the hunt for used plastics, reducing the volume of garbage that ends up in the Ozama River. Funsaco pays RD$3 per pound of clean and packaged plastics. As reported in Diario Libre, every 15 days they purchase around 2,600 lbs of plastic from community members.
