The Director General of Migration, Jose Ricardo Taveras, has confirmed that the country is not obliged to take in Haitian nationals who are being repatriated from Brazil and other countries, if they did not leave from the Dominican Republic.
Taveras made the announcement, as in the last few months Brazil has sent more than 300 Haitians to the Dominican Republic on the grounds that they had set out from here. The Haitians reportedly entered Brazil from Ecuador.
He said that the DR, as a signatory to the International Migration Treaty was obliged to take back foreigners who had left this country illegally for another, but if these Haitians who Brazil wanted to send back had not left from Dominican territory then they could not be sent here.
