The Ministry of Agriculture, through the Dominican Council of Fisheries and Aquaculture (Codopesca), is creating the Federation of Dominican Fishermen, with the aim of improving economic conditions of both men and women working in the fishing industry throughout the country.
The announcement was made by the executive director of Codopesca, Francisco Manuel Frias Olivencia, at the start of a course which seeks to strengthen and update knowledge on aquaculture, marine fisheries, species measurement, laws in governing fishing, international conventions and other issues that staff working in Codopesca must handle.
Olivencia said that fishermen would be trained and instructed in species conservation as well.
The training, organized by Codopesca, has the support of Agriculture Minister Luis Ramon Rodriguez, the Marine Biology Research Center (CIBIMA), the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD), the Dominican Agriculture and Forestry Institute (IDIAF) and other organizations committed to the development of aquaculture and marine fisheries in the Dominican Republic.
