Political parties get RD$8.2 billion in 16 years

What the nation has to show for the RD$8.2 billion given to the political parties for use practically at their discretion is up for discussion. But the fact is that since Congress decided to finance the political parties in 1998, as set out in Electoral Law 275-97, sociologists say that the bill has not strengthened politics in the country.

In 2012 alone, taxpayer money was distributed as follows: RD$373.6 million to the PLD and the PRD. The PRSC received RD$323.5 million. This year, the PRD and the PLD and the PRSC will each receive RD$214.6 million. Diario Libre reports that the Electoral law 275-97 is under review in Congress, which for several years has only tentatively reviewed the Political Parties Bill aimed at increasing controls on the political parties.
