Ministry of Environment advisor Domingo Contreras has announced the introduction of a first water public transport route as part of the Comprehensive Plan for Urban Intervention and Environmental Rescue of La Barquita and Los Mina Norte in Santo Domingo East. Boats will connect the Santo Domingo Metro with eastern Santo Domingo, as reported in El Dia. Contreras made the announcement during the presentation of the project during the Corripio Media Group luncheon yesterday, Wednesday 22 May.
The proram calls for relocating 2,200 family units housing an estimated 12,000 people to the former farm of Melido Marte and the area around the Cachon de la Rubia Wetland Park in eastern Santo Domingo. After the relocation of the residents, the park area will be improved with a panoramic viewing point with trails and an additional 400,000 square meters. The new city attraction includes the option of taking boat trips to visit the Ozama wetlands. He said the program would include waste collection systems to improve quality of life and the environment. The program is being implemented this year with an investment of RD$2 billion in the 2013 and 2014-2015 budgets.
Father Gregorio Alegria of the San Vicente de Paul Parish, Ministry of Environment advisor Domingo Contreras, Santo Domingo Water Works (CAASD) Alejandro Montas, Eastern Santo Domingo Urban Planning director Miguelina Santana, Xenia Garcia Cordero from the Ministry of the Presidency, program coordinator Patricia Cuevas, and Jose Miguel Gonzalez Cuadra, executive director of the commission that is overseeing the program attended the meeting where the announcement was made.
