The Ministry of Public Works wants the government to merge the Supervisory Office of Public Works of the Presidency (OISOE) with the Ministry. Under the Fernandez presidency the OISOE operated as a parallel public works office. Minister Gonzalo Castillo proposes a Department of Public Works and General Building (Direccion de Obras Estatales y Edificaciones Generales n DOEGG) operate under the Ministry of Public Works. He said that there should not be two state bodies that work on public works nationwide. He believes that a single entity will improve supervision of public works.
In an email sent to the press Castillo also said that a new tender would be held for the proposed Cibao-San Juan de la Maguana highway, a very controversial project. He criticized works for the highway already begun by Odebrecht. He said that preliminary studies showed the highway would cost US$300-US$400 million, but he hopes that a lower cost alternative will be found with the new tender.
