The president of the Dominican Medical Association (CMD) travelled to the city of Santiago yesterday, Tuesday 28 May, to supervise the work stoppage called by the organization in demand for improvements to the health centers and better salaries for healthcare workers. At the Toribio Bencosme hospital in Moca and the Morillo King hospital in La Vega, doctors and nurses chanted slogans, according to Hoy newspaper. CMD president Amarilis Herrera said she knew that doctors are an essential part of the country and that because of this she felt that they deserve to work in decent, quality areas and have better salaries. She told reporters that the strike was effective in all 14 provinces of the Cibao Valley. Herrera said that she hoped the health authorities would sit down and discuss the situation. The CMD is calling for a 100% salary increase for doctors, nurses and lab technicians.
